Asian handicap explained: how every line settles, with examples
Asian handicap gives one team a goal head start or deficit and settles the bet on the adjusted score, so there is no draw outcome to bet against. A team at -0.5 has to win; a team at +0.5 must avoid defeat; at 0 a draw returns your stake. Quarter lines such as -0.25 and -0.75 split your stake across the two nearest lines, which is where half wins and half losses come from. The table below shows how every common line settles.
How each line settles
Results are from the backed team’s side, on the score after 90 minutes.
| Line | Win by 2+ | Win by 1 | Draw | Lose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Win | Win | Push (stake back) | Lose |
| -0.25 | Win | Win | Half lost | Lose |
| -0.5 | Win | Win | Lose | Lose |
| -0.75 | Win | Half won | Lose | Lose |
| -1 | Win | Push | Lose | Lose |
| -1.25 | Win | Half lost | Lose | Lose |
| -1.5 | Win | Lose | Lose | Lose |
| +0.25 | Win | Win | Half won | Lose |
| +0.5 | Win | Win | Win | Lose |
| +0.75 | Win | Win | Win | Half lost if lose by 1 |
For +0.75 the last column needs one more detail: losing by exactly 1 is a half loss (the +0.5 half loses, the +1 half is refunded), and losing by 2 or more is a full loss.
Whole, half and quarter lines
- Whole lines (0, -1, -2) can push: if the margin equals the line, your stake comes back.
- Half lines (-0.5, -1.5) can’t push. Every result is a win or a loss.
- Quarter lines (-0.25, -0.75, -1.25) are two bets in one. -0.75 is half on -0.5 and half on -1. Win by exactly 1 and the -0.5 half wins while the -1 half is refunded: a half win.
Half results are settled at the same price. A half win at odds of 1.90 returns the refunded half plus the winning half at 1.90; a half loss returns the refunded half only.
Asian handicap vs 1X2 and draw no bet
Some Asian handicap lines are other markets in disguise:
| Asian handicap | Same as |
|---|---|
| Team -0.5 | Team to win (1X2) |
| Team 0 | Draw no bet |
| Team +0.5 | Team to win or draw (double chance) |
That makes Asian handicap prices easy to compare with 1X2. The main line — the one priced closest to even money on both sides — is the market’s view of the gap between the teams. A favourite at -1.25 is expected to win by more than a favourite at -0.25.
Why Asian handicap lines move
When money arrives on one side, the bookmaker can move the price (-0.5 at 1.95 becomes -0.5 at 1.85) or the line itself (-0.5 becomes -0.75). A move across a line is the bigger signal. A favourite going from -0.5 to -0.75 means money came in on the favourite; a favourite going from -0.25 to 0 means money left it. Reading these moves in no-vig probability is covered in implied probability explained and what is line movement.
A worked example
Team A are -0.75 at 1.95 against Team B.
- A win 2-0: win.
- A win 2-1: half won — the -0.5 half wins at 1.95, the -1 half is refunded.
- 1-1 draw: loss.
- A lose: loss.
Now the same match at Team A -0.25 at 1.60: a 2-1 win is a full win, but a 1-1 draw becomes a half loss. The lower line wins more often, and pays less.
A real line move from our records
Everton v Manchester United in the Premier League on 6 September 2026 is a clean example of a move across a quarter line. In our first snapshot, about 20 hours before kick-off, Everton were +0.25 at 2.03 and Manchester United -0.25 at 1.88. About six hours before kick-off the line moved to Everton +0.5 at 1.96 and United -0.5 at 1.96, and it stayed there. Over the same period United’s 1X2 price shortened from 2.15 to 1.96, which points to money arriving on United.
| Result | United -0.25 (opening) | United -0.5 (closing) |
|---|---|---|
| United win | Win | Win |
| Draw | Half lost | Lose |
| Everton win | Lose | Lose |
The move took away the half refund that United backers had on a draw, while Everton backers who took +0.5 were paid in full on a draw instead of half. One match proves nothing about who was right; it shows why the line you take matters as much as the price.
How each line actually settled: 2,751 matches
Settlement tables show what can happen. Our records show what did. We took every soccer league match SharpPick recorded between September 1 and October 13, 2026 that had a main Asian handicap line before kick-off and an official full-time result — 2,751 matches in 91 leagues, with cup and play-off games left out so every score is a 90-minute score — and settled the favourite’s closing line against the final score. The closing line is the last main line recorded before kick-off; at a level line (0) the favourite is the side with the shorter price.
| Favourite’s closing line | Matches | Full win | Half win | Push | Half loss | Full loss |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 398 | 38.4% | — | 29.4% | — | 32.2% |
| -0.25 | 806 | 43.7% | — | — | 27.8% | 28.5% |
| -0.5 | 555 | 48.1% | — | — | — | 51.9% |
| -0.75 | 384 | 29.4% | 26.8% | — | — | 43.8% |
| -1 | 244 | 39.8% | — | 27.0% | — | 33.2% |
| -1.25 | 163 | 45.4% | — | — | 23.3% | 31.3% |
| -1.5 | 79 | 40.5% | — | — | — | 59.5% |
| -1.75 and bigger | 122 | 33.6% | 6.6% | 6.6% | 2.5% | 50.8% |
Three things the table says:
- About one match in four lands exactly on the line. At 0, 29.4% of matches were drawn and pushed. At -0.25 the same draw became a half loss, 27.8% of the time. At -1, 27.0% of favourites won by exactly one goal and pushed; at -0.75 that same one-goal win was a half win (26.8%), and at -1.25 a half loss (23.3%). The quarter line does not change how often the boundary result happens. It only changes what you get when it does.
- Half lines have no cushion. Favourites at -0.5 won outright 48.1% of the time and lost the other 51.9%. At -1.5 they covered 40.5%. Those are the only two rows where every ticket is a full win or a full loss.
- The bigger the line, the rarer the full win. 48.1% at -0.5, 40.5% at -1.5, 33.6% at -1.75 and bigger. A -1.75 favourite is usually a much stronger team, but the line asks it to win by two, and six weeks of results say that happened about one time in three.
Six weeks is a short sample, and the rows under 200 matches will move by several points as the season goes on. Read the pattern, not the decimals.
How often the main line moved before kick-off
Across the same 2,751 matches we compared the first main line we recorded with the closing line:
| First snapshot to close | Matches | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Same line | 1,722 | 62.6% |
| Moved one quarter (for example -0.5 to -0.75) | 974 | 35.4% |
| Moved two quarters or more | 55 | 2.0% |
A one-quarter move is common; two or more is rare. Two matches from the weekend of October 11, 2026 show what a one-quarter move does to a ticket:
- Hull City v Everton, Premier League. Hull opened at +0.5 and closed at +0.25 (2.10), with Everton -0.25 at 1.84. The match ended 2–2. Hull at +0.5 was a full win; Hull at +0.25 was only a half win, and Everton -0.25 backers got half their stake back instead of losing all of it.
- Akhmat Grozny v Baltika Kaliningrad, Russian Premier League. Akhmat opened at 0 and closed at -0.25 (2.03). It finished 0–0. At 0 the home ticket was a push; at -0.25 it was a half loss.
Neither match proves that a move was right or wrong. They show that the line you are given at the moment you bet decides the settlement as much as the score does. The matches where the line moved most before kick-off are listed every day on dropping odds today.

FAQ
What does Asian handicap +0.25 mean?
Your stake is split in two: half on +0 and half on +0.5. If your team wins, both halves win. If it draws, the +0 half is refunded and the +0.5 half wins, so you win half. If it loses, both halves lose.
Is Asian handicap 0 the same as draw no bet?
Yes. A win settles as a win, a loss as a loss, and a draw returns your stake.
How often does a -0.5 favourite win?
In 555 league matches SharpPick recorded from September 1 to October 13, 2026, favourites at a closing line of -0.5 won 48.1% of the time and lost 51.9%. At -1.5 the cover rate was 40.5% over 79 matches. Short samples move, so read these as a pattern rather than a rule.
Does extra time count in Asian handicap?
At most sportsbooks soccer handicaps settle on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time; extra time and penalty shoot-outs are not counted. Check your bookmaker's rules for the competition.
